Virginie Ledoyen
(born Virginie Fernandez on November 15, 1976 in
Aubervilliers) is a French actress. She was a print
model from the age of 2 and later took on the stage name
"Ledoyen" after the maiden name of her
maternal grandmother, who had been a stage actress. the
daughter of Bernard, a salesman and Olga, a retaurant
manager. Her grandparents are Spanish and it has been
suggested that this is where she inherited her unusual
eyes. Virginie's parents are divorced and her mother
remarried. Virginie has a brother, Michel.
Virginie's modeling began at the age of two. This led
eventually to her first film, an Italian comedy at the
age of nine. It was at this time that she also enrolled
in a performing arts school. By the age of eleven,
Virginie had also acted in the theatre.
At 15, Virginie realized that acting would be something
that she would like to pursue as a full time occupation.
In 1994 when she was 17, she appeared in a movie called
Cold Water where she played a troubled teen. This proved
to be her big break and led to bigger things, including
a 1995 film known as Single Girl which received critical
acclaim.
Following thisl, Virginie received calls from Hollywood
including Woody Allen's agent. At this point she not yet
been involved in an American production. This changed
with the release of The Beach in February 2000.
Nominated for Most Promising Young Actress at the 1996 César
Awards for her role in Benoît Jacquot's A Single Girl.
Virginie was also nominated for Best Actress at the
Paris Film Festival for the film Jeanne et le Garçon
Formidable.
Her breakthrough came with La Fille seule (1995) for
which she was nominated for a César Award (France's
version of the Oscar). Outside of France, her best-known
role is alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Beach (2000).
On 29 September 2001 she gave birth to her first child,
a girl named Lilas (meaning "Lilac" in
French).

She began to model as a baby and had appeared in several
advertisements by the age of 3. Her first film role came
at the tender age of 9 when her photograph caught the
eye of an Italian director who cast her in an instant.
During the same year, her parents decided to enroll
Virginie in a special school for the performing arts.
Two years later, and she added several stage
performances to her resume as well.
Following this, Virginie received calls from Hollywood
including Woody Allen's agent. At this point she not yet
been involved in an American production. This changed
with the release of The Beach in February 2000. When she
isn't acting, Virginie loves to read. She is also
heavily involved with an organization called 'Pour le
Tibet' which provides medical aid to Tibeten centers.
When Virginie was well into her teenage years, she came
to the conclusion that she was meant to act. She
committed to the goal right then and there and pursued
the craft with dogged determination. The break she had
been looking for came in 1994 at the age of 17. Virginie
was cast in the film Cold Water as a troubled
adolescent.
Her performance in the film, as well as in the surprise
hit Single Girl the next year, received rave reviews. In
response to the latter the New York Times said that
Virginie Ledoyen had a "natural screen
presence." It did not take long for the casting
agents to call, including one representing Woody Allen.
Yet Virginie did not succumb to the temptation of
Hollywood until the 2000 release The Beach, a Leonardo
DiCaprio vehicle adapted from the bestseller of the same
name by Alex Garland. The film did not fare well at the
box office but the verdict was in on Virginie, as she
was hailed as a star in the making.
The beautiful brunette has not strayed from her native
France since and has chosen to select her roles with
care, instead of pandering to the Hollywood standard.
She is set to star with Rupert Everett in the film Bon
Voyage, set for release in 2003. In addition, she is
under contract with L'Oréal Paris as a spokesmodel.
When Virginie is not in front of the camera lens, either
on a fashion or film shoot, she is an avid reader of
Dostoevsky and Henry Miller no less, promoter of several
charitable causes, and a recent mother to her first
child, Lilas.
