During her early years the glamorous
life did not exist for Trina, she faced many hard times,
the chorus from her song “U & ME” off the
Diamond Princess album speaks for itself
“And even through the loneliest time we survived
through our loneliest nights, Just think about the
struggling times when we survived through a nickel and
dime, And even if I had all the bread in the world I’d
give it all up for one shot at You and Me, I’m that
same b*tch ”
Despite growing up in Liberty City, a rough area of
Miami Trina managed to do positive things with her life
and became a real estate agent. At that point of her
life she did not expect to pursue a career in music but
slowly everything changed around. A local Miami rapper
named Trick Daddy was establishing his career in 1997
when he meet Trina and saw the talent in her, when it
was time to work on his new album he gave Trina a chance
to be featured on a track.
In 1998 that track “Nann N*gga”
ended up being the first single of his www.thug.com
album, the single became a hit reaching No. 3 on the Rap
Charts. Thanks to the success of the single Trina gained
popularity and got a deal with Slip-N-Side Records who
is associated with Atlantic Records.
Before pursuing a music career Trina was
a real estate agent. Trina then meet Trick Daddy, who
was the one to get Trina started on her music.
In 1998 Trina was featured on Trick Daddy's single
"Nann Nigga" which helped her get noticeable
in the rap industry. In March of 2000 Trina released her
debut album Da Baddest Bitch.
The album featured two successful singles "Da
Baddest Bitch" and "Pull Over." The album
was certified Gold and has now sold over 700,000 copies
in the United States.
For the next year she toured and was featured in other
artists singles such as Missy Elliott's "One Minute
Man (Remix)." In August of 2002 Trina released her
second album Diamond Princess. The album debuted at No.
14 on The Billboard 200 selling 67,000 in its first
week.
So far the album has only sold 490,000 copies. The album
produced two small hits "No Panties" featuring
Tweet and "B R Right" featuring Ludacris. Over
the next few years Trina took a break from her own music
but was featured on hits such as Chingy's "Right
Thurr (Remix)", Webbie's "Bad Bitch
(Remix)" and most recent Ebony Eyez's "In Ya
Face (Remix)."
In the fall of 2005 Trina launched her own fragrance
line of perfume called "Diamond Princess by
Trina".
On October of 2005 Trina released her highly anticipated
third album Glamorest Life. The album debuted at No. 11
on the Billboard 200 chart selling 77,000 copies in its
first week making it her highest entry on the chart to
date.
Career Kick Off (2000-2001): March of 2000
Trina’s debut album Da Baddest Bitch was released, the
album entered the Billboard Chart at No. 33. The albums
lead single also titled “Da Baddest B*tch” put Trina
on the map, claiming her spot as the baddest b*tch in
the industry. The following single “Pull Over”
became an even bigger success, the song brought
attention to Trina’s ass which got her plenty of
recognition. Trina had now become a household name and
got a taste of success, her album sold more than 700,000
copies receiving a Gold certification, even though her
singles didn’t blow up the charts they still managed
to do well, she appeared on magazine covers, and earned
nominations at several award shows the following year.
At the time literally all the female rappers hailed from
the east cost, Trina had now open the doors for female
rappers hailing from the dirty south.
Trina now began appearing on other
artists tracks, collaborating with artist such has long
time friend Trick Daddy, Silkk The Shocker and with
Missy Elliott on the remix of “One Minute Man”, the
song gave Trina a boost to exposure being that it became
a Top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, the video
received major airplay on the music channels, it also
gave Trina an opportunity to perform live at the 2001
MTV Video Music Awards along side Missy and featured
artist Ludacris, the following year at the 2002 awards
the video was up for 6 nominations. In early 2002 a new
single “Told Y’all” featuring Rick Ross was
released, the song was part of the All About The
Benjamins soundtrack and would later be included in
Trina’s upcoming album.
Follow-up Success (2002-2004): On August 27, 2002
the second album by Trina titled Diamond Princess was
released, entering the Billboard 200 at No. 14 selling
67,000 copies in its first week of release. “No
Panties” featuring new R&B star Tweet was the
albums first single, the follow up single “B R
Right” featuring Ludacris became the albums leading
hit, breaking into the Top 30 on Billboards Rap Track,
and earning her a nomination for Female Single of the
Year at the 2003 Source Hip Hop Music Awards, she also
was nominated for Female Artist of the Year and
performed “B R Right” at the ceremony. Overall the
album did well, although it has not been certified the
album has sold 490,000 copies making it 10,000 copies
away from Gold status.
As the year 2004 came along Trina made a
remake of LL Cool J’s 1989 hit “Big Ole Butt” but
with a different twist. Her version properly titled
"I’m Leaving You (Big Ol’ D*ck)" defiantly
had shocking lyrics that lead to controversy. On the
record Trina mentions some of raps biggest stars and
emphasizes how big there d*cks are and there sex skills.
The names of various rappers were included in the song
including 50 Cent, Diddy, Jay-Z, and Nelly. Despite the
rumors Trina claims none of what she said in the song is
true, during an interview with MTV Trina stated this
when asked about the song
“ It was all out of the love and respect I have for
them: It's not personal, I didn't sleep with them. Ain't
no personal relationships going on. I couldn't name
every male in the industry, I got the best ones
possible. Everybody is feeling the song. ”
Third Base (2005-2006): Trina expanded her
talents beyond music in the summer of 2005 when she
released her own fragrance line Diamond Princess by
Trina, the fragrance is affordable for her fans, $49 is
the cost of the 1.7 oz. perfume. After over a year in
delay Trina’s third album Glamorest Life which was
originally scheduled to be released in the summer of
2004 hit stores in October of 2005. The set arrived at
No. 11 on the Billboard 200 selling 77,000 copies in its
first week of release, so far making it her highest
debut and best sells week by any of her albums. The
album had potential to succeed but it actually failed,
it fell off the charts quickly and only sold 389,000
copies, making it Trina’s lowest selling album.
The first single “Don’t Trip” which featured rap
artist Lil Wayne also became a failure, but the
collaboration on the song wasn’t the only thing being
talked about, rumors being to fly that Trina and Lil
Wayne were dating, although it may appear as if it was
true, it was never confirmed or denied. A second single
was released nevertheless, “Here We Go” featuring
former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland.
Surprisingly the record became a huge hit, making its
way into Billboard’s 100 Top 20 and all the way to No.
3 on the Rap Charts.
Overseas it was received well, peaking at No. 15 in the
U.K. Chart. The single became Trina’s most successful
ever, its position on the Billboard charts is way higher
than any of her previous singles, and its her only
single to even chart in the United Kingdom. Although the
album is describe as a failure, its hard to call it that
when it produced her biggest hit and earned her an
American Music Award nomination. It was announced in
2006 that Trina parted ways with her record label
Atlantic Records, she still remains with Slip-N-Slide
but has signed a new deal with a new label, no word yet
to which label signed her because that information has
not been released.
Upcoming projects: Trina is currently working on
her fourth album, it was scheduled to arrive on December
19, 2006 but the release date has been pushed back 4
times now. It was originally confirmed Da Baddest Bitch
II would be the name of the album, Trina recently now
stated she is not sure what the album will be called and
plans on a August 2007 release. Besides her album she
will release a new fragrance line which is untitled yet,
as well as her own clothing line DP Wear. |
