Sienna Rose Miller (born December 28,
1981) is an American-born English actress and model.
Early life: Miller was born in New York City. She
moved to England as a child and attended the Heathfield
school in Ascot, Berkshire and later studied for a year
at the Lee Strasberg Institute with luminaries like Will
Lee and Koni Summer in New York City.
Miller was born to hippie parents. Her father, Edward
Miller, is an American banker born in Meadville,
Pennsylvania. Her mother, Jo Miller, is a South African
who ran Lee Strasberg's acting academy in London. Her
parents parted when she was six years old, and her
father subsequently married (and later separated from)
the English interior designer Kelly Hoppen. Miller has
one sister, Savannah, who is a fashion designer; two
half-brothers, Charles and Steven, and one former
step-sister, Natasha (daughter of Hoppen).
Career: Prior to her professional acting career,
Miller worked as a photographic model. Following her
appearance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2004, she was
credited by many with having popularised the fashion
style of boho-chic in Britain. Miller currently models
for Pepe Jeans, and she posed for Vanity Fair magazine's
2006 Hollywood Issue topless and smoking a cigarette.
She had a recurring role in the television series Keen
Eddie. Miller appeared in supporting roles in the 2004
remake of the 1966 movie Alfie as well as in Layer Cake
(2004). She played the female lead opposite Heath Ledger
in the period drama, Casanova (2005).
In 2005, Miller made her West End debut as Celia in
Shakespeare's As You Like It. She played the role of
Rosalind for one performance, when Helen McCrory, the
actress playing the lead, fell ill.
She stars in Factory Girl, a film about 1960s socialite
and Andy Warhol's muse Edie Sedgwick that opened
December 29, 2006. Although the film has been deemed
controversial, her performance has received acclaim.
Miller has several high-profile projects due out in the
next year. In 2007, she stars opposite Michelle Pfeiffer
and Robert DeNiro in the fantasy epic Stardust, and
opposite James Franco in the horror comedy Camille,
Interview directed by Steve Buscemi, and the film
version of writer Michael Chabon's novel, The Mysteries
of Pittsburgh, also starring Peter Sarsgaard. She will
next work on The Best Time of Our Lives, a biopic of
Dylan Thomas in which she plays his wife Caitlin.
In the short time that Sienna Miller has been an
actress, the 5’6” slender blonde from New York has
attracted a lot of attention. However, much of the
attention has not focused on her acting abilities:
instead, the paparazzi has hounded the nubile lass
because of her burgeoning relationship with Hollywood
stud Jude Law. But Miller has demonstrated considerable
acting skills on the television series “Keen Eddie”
(Fox, 2002-2003), where the American-born actress plays
a Brit opposite Mark Valley’s NYPD detective.
Born on December 28, 1982, in New York, Miller grew up
in a well-to-do home. Her father, Ed Miller, was a
prominent banker who was married to top interior
designer, Kelly Hoppen, for over ten years. Her
biological mom, Jo Miller, directed a Lee Strasberg
program at a London drama school. Miller spent most of
her youth attending school in England, including
Heathfield in Ascot, Surrey, one of the few remaining
all-girl boarding schools. As a student, Miller was
known for her wild side: she had a penchant for
streaking the lacrosse field and snogging the gardener.
All in all, Miller balanced having a good time with
excelling in her studies, which included music, dance,
sports and acting.
Miller returned to New York after graduating from
Heathfield to study acting full time at the Lee
Strasberg Institute. The actress performed in numerous
NYC productions, including “A School for Scandal” by
British playwright Richard Brinsely Sheridan and
“Cigarettes and Chocolate” by writer/director
Anthony Minghella. Miller made the jump to television
with her role as Fiona Bickerton on “Keen Eddie”,
where she played a British woman forced to live with an
NYPD detective (Valley), who is on the trail of a drug
dealer he let get away back in the States.
Miller was also cast in a remake of the 1966 comedy
classic, “Alfie” (2004). In the update, Miller
played one of many women seduced by the roguish Cockney,
Alfie (Law) who appears at first to be his perfect,
undemanding match--and indeed, the actress' edgy
performance was singled out as one of the remake's finer
elements. Miller and Law spent most of the shoot
avoiding the paparazzi, who smelt a story once they
realized the two stars were together, despite Law being
in the midst of divorce proceedings with actress Sadie
Frost. Before the ink was dry on the papers, Law moved
into an NYC apartment with Miller to allow their romance
to “blossom away from prying eyes."
Her skills as an actress attracted the attention of
British producer Matthew Vaughn of “Lock, Stock and
Two Smoking Barrels” (1999) and “Snatch” (2001)
fame. Vaughn cast Miller in his first feature as
director, “Layer Cake” (2004), another British
gangster comedy involving thugs, drugs and double
crosses. In 2005 while Miller was appearing in London's
West End production of "As You Like It " her
fiancé Law made a public admission of infidelity,
apologizing for an affair with his children's nanny (a
teary-eyed Miller appeared in the play the day the news
broke, but was subsequently replaced by her understudy).
The couple's seemingly on-again,
off-again relationship captivated the press for several
months in 2005; meanwhile, she demonstrated her
continuing growth as an actress in "Casanova"
(2005), director Lasse Hallstrom's fictionalized account
of the legendary lothario (Heath Ledger) falling in love
at last, was easily one of the most ill-conceived and
disappointing films of the year, despite lavish
production values and game performances by
Miller--playing the strong-willed, independent-minded
Italian noblewoman and secret author who captures
Casanova's heart-- and the rest of the all-star cast.
As a designer: Miller has lent her support to
design limited edition T-shirts or vests for the 'Little
Tee Campaign' for Breast Cancer Care which donates money
for breast cancer research. She has also agreed to
design a range of jeans for Pepe. Miller started a
fashion company with her sister Savannah. The company,
Twenty8Twelve, gets its name from Sienna Miller's date
of birth.
Charity work: She has also supported Breast
Cancer Haven's Lend a Hand, Raise a Grand Appeal which
asks people to raise £1,000 in one year for Breast
Cancer Haven, which runs centers offering a free program
for support, information and complementary therapies to
anyone affected by the disease. She encouraged others to
take part, saying "The Lend a Hand, Raise a Grand
appeal is your chance to support a fantastic charity. It
is a chance for you to make a difference -- a little bit
of effort goes a long way with this unique initiative.
We are all affected by breast cancer so please, please
support it." Miller is also an ambassador for the
Starlight Children's Foundation.
Personal life: Miller's relationship with Jude
Law has been frequently featured in the entertainment
press. On Christmas Day of 2004, they became engaged.
However, on July 18, 2005, Law issued a public apology
to her for having an affair with Daisy Wright, the nanny
of his children by his former wife (actress Sadie
Frost). At the same time, Miller was rumored to be
having an affair with Law's friend, Daniel Craig.
Despite attempting to salvage their relationship, Miller
and Law separated. They reunited briefly in 2006, before
separating again . In January of 2007, Miller was
spotted being taken to her hotel in the early morning
hours by P. Diddy after a night of partying. Another
video appeared in April 2007 showing some of her posse
harassing a paparazzo after, it is alleged, she left a
club several minutes after Combs.
While on location in Pennsylvania, working The Mysteries
of Pittsburgh, Miller made derogatory comments about the
city, referring to Pittsburgh as "Shitsburgh",
in an interview for Rolling Stone magazine . She
apologized, noting that her father grew up in Western
Pennsylvania only 85 miles from the city. Miller was
forced to retract her profane comment by the film's
producers[citation needed]. Her apology was damage
control, Miller told the Guardian, and in her opinion
calling the city "Shitsburgh" was not a big
deal. |
