Work on the script began before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was released, so filming could begin before the actors grew too old for their parts. Director Andrew Adamson wanted to make the film more spectacular than the first, and created an action sequence not in the novel to up the ante. The Narnians were designed to look wilder as they have been hiding from persecution, to stress the darker tone of the sequel. The filmmakers also took a Spanish influence for the antagonistic race of the Telmarines. Filming began in February 2007 in New Zealand, but unlike the previous film, the majority of shooting took place in Central Europe, because of the larger sets available in those countries. To keep costs down, Adamson chose to base post-production in the UK, because of recent tax credits there.

In Narnia, Caspian, a Telmarine Prince, is wakened by his mentor, Doctor Cornelius, who explains to him that his aunt has just given birth to a son, meaning that if his treacherous Uncle Miraz killed Caspian, he would be the sole heir to the throne and his son would be his successor. Caspian, realizing that his life is in danger, escapes with his horse and a small ivory horn given to him by Dr. Cornelius, who says not to blow it except in great need. Followed by several Telmarine soldiers, Caspian encounters two Narnian dwarves and a talking badger in the woods. Terrified, he blows the horn. One of the Narnian dwarves, Trumpkin, goes off to stop the soldiers and gets captured, while the other dwarf, Nikabrik, and the badger, Trufflehunter, carry Caspian inside their house.

Back in England, the four Pevensie children are heading into a subway station to depart for school, one year having passed in their world since they first entered Narnia. Just as the subway train pulls into the station, the walls start sucking in, and the whole station tears apart to leave the Pevensies in a large cave by a beach in what they immediately recognize as Narnia. After playing in the waves of the sea, they discover Cair Paravel, their castle, has turned to ruins.

Meanwhile, Nikabrik is all for killing Caspian because he's a Telmarine, but Trufflehunter reminds him that Caspian, having blown the horn of Queen Susan, will lead the Narnians to freedom. They lead Caspian to the Dancing Lawn, where all the old Narnians have assembled, including the swashbuckling mouse, Reepicheep, who offers Caspian his services. However, the Narnians are disgruntled at the Telmarines and don't want one of them to be their leader. Caspian, however, convinces them that if they help him reclaim his throne, he can bring peace between them.

Trumpkin is taken by Telmarines to the waters near Cair Paravel to be drowned, but the Pevensies save him. After proving to the dwarf that they are the Kings and Queens of old, they set off to find the others. Lucy glimpses Aslan and tries to convince the others that she's seen him, but only Edmund believes her. After many twists and turns, they eventually encounter Caspian and his troops, who take them to Aslan's How, a huge underground hall built over the Stone Table. Caspian thinks they should stay and defend Aslan's How, but Peter suggests that they strike first by attacking the castle. Lucy suggests waiting for Aslan to give instructions, but Peter decides they've waited long enough for Aslan.

The Narnians attempt to capture Miraz at the castle, and succeed in battling the Telmarine guards until hundreds of Telmarine archers line the walls of the courtyard and open fire. Seeing that if they keep fighting they will all be killed by the force of the archers, Peter calls for a retreat. Peter, Edmund, Susan, Caspian, and half of the Narnians manage to escape, but the rest are caught by the falling gate and brutally slaughtered. After the harrowing battle, Peter and Caspian have a bitter dispute over which of the two of them is better qualified to lead the revolt against Miraz and be King of Narnia. Their quarrel almost leads to a vicious swordfight, until Trumpkin is brought before them wounded, and Lucy administers medicine to him. Caspian storms away feeling he no longer owes Peter his allegience.

When they get back to Aslan's How, Nikabrik calls Caspian aside to show him two of his friends, a hag and a werewolf, who state that they can help him claim his throne. The hag calls upon the White Witch using black sorcery. From inside a wall of ice, the Witch tries to convince Caspian, who had not realized what Nikabrik and the others had planned to do, to offer her a drop of his blood in order to set her free. Caspian momentarily considers the offer, but ultimately rejects it; thus Nikabrik cuts Caspian's hand in an attempt to get the Witch his blood against his will. Peter and Edmund arrive and quickly decapacitate Nikabrik, the wolf, and the hag, and Edmund shatters the wall of ice before the Witch can completely materialize.

Peter then suggests that he and Miraz duel one-on-one under the condition of surrender, in order to prevent any further losses of life. Miraz is forced to accept, as it would look cowardly to refuse to fight a boy half his age. Peter and Miraz battle, and Peter eventually is able to wound Miraz, but gives his sword to Caspian to finish him off. Caspian, who cannot bring himself to do it, lets Miraz keep his life, but says that he intends to give Narnia back to its people.

One of the Telmarine lords suddenly stabs and kills Miraz and blames it on the Narnians. He calls the Telmarine army, which is waiting just outside the How, to advance so that they can obliterate the Narnians. The Telmarines unfurl nasty trebuchets which fire a continuous stream of boulders at the Narnian army. In an effort to fight back, the Narnians try several tactics, including destroying underground tunnels underneath the army, and sending gryphons overhead with archers in their claws. In one final hope, they charge head on with the Telmarines.

Lucy, meanwhile, has found Aslan in the woods, who awakens the trees that have been in a deep sleep. The whole forest begins to ripple with movement, and this energy travels back toward the battlefield. With the whole forest suddenly against them, the Telemarines retreat back to the bridge of Beruna, where Aslan summons the river god, who destroys the bridge and wipes out the majority of the Telmarine army; all of the surviving Telmarine soldiers are forced to surrender and hand over their weapons.

Before the Pevensies depart, Peter and Susan declare, much to Caspian, Edmund, and Lucy's dismay, that Aslan has told them they will never return to Narnia. Aslan explains that all things run their course and that Susan and Peter have gained everything they could possibly gain from their experiences in Narnia and are no longer needed there. Susan and Caspian share a kiss, then the Pevensies go back to England, leaving Caspian as King of Narnia.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe composer Harry Gregson-Williams began composing the sequel in December 2007. Recording began at Abbey Road Studios the following month, and finished by April 2008. He said the score would be darker and more aggressive than the previous film, and that he would develop "one or two of the cues", as well as compose new themes. The Crouch End Festival Chorus, Regina Spektor's song, "The Call" and Switchfoot's song, "This Is Home", are featured on the soundtrack.

The film made an estimated $19.3 million on its first day of release in the United States. It received generally positive reviews from critics. As of May 17, 2008, the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported that 70% of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 109 reviews. Metacritic reported the film had an average score of 64 out of 100, based on 30 reviews.

Both the film industry trade journals gave the film positive reviews. Todd McCarthy of Variety felt Adamson's direction had a "surer sense of cinematic values" and praised the improved special effects, the "timeless" locations and production design. On the performances, he felt "the four kids overall have more character and are therefore more interesting to watch than they were before, and Italian actor Castellitto registers strongly with evil that's implacable but not overplayed." Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter noted the film was darker than the original, with "the loss of innocence theme [...] significantly deepened". He highlighted Peter Dinklage's performance, which "outmaneuvered the title character as Narnia's most colorful new inhabitant".

A number of critics took issue with the film's underlying messages. San Francisco Chronicle critic Mick Lasalle, who called the picture "a dragged-out exercise, with no epic scale and no spirit worth talking about," wrote in his parental advisory that "basically, this is a movie about kids who go into another world and dimension and spend the whole time killing people." MSNBC reviewer Alonso Duralde noted that "all the heroes have British accents while the Telmarines are all decidedly Mediterranean in appearance and inflection". Slate critic Dana Stevens echoed these concerns, writing that they also weaken dramatic weight: "After a battle, Lucy anoints a few favored survivors with what amounts to a kind of anti-death serum, so that we get to experience the thrill of near-annihilation without actually having to mourn [...] Whatever their religious faith or lack thereof, most viewers know a narrative cop-out when they see one."
