Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a 2007 musical thriller, and the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's award-winning 1979 stage musical. It re-tells the Victorian melodramatic tale of Sweeney Todd, a fictitious English barber who, driven insane by the loss of his wife and daughter, murders his customers with a cut-throat razor, and with the help of his accomplice Mrs. Lovett turns their remains into meat pies. Having been struck by the cinematic qualities of Sondheim's musical while still a student, director Tim Burton had entertained the notion of a film version since the early 1980s. However, it was not until 2006 that he had the opportunity to realize this ambition, when DreamWorks announced his appointment as replacement for director Sam Mendes, who had been working on such an adaptation. Sondheim, although not directly involved, was extensively consulted during the film's production. It stars Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd and Helena Bonham Carter as Nellie Lovett. Depp, not known for his singing, took lessons in preparation for his role, which producer Richard D. Zanuck acknowledged was something of a gamble. However, Depp's vocal performance, despite being criticized as lacking certain musical qualities, was generally thought by critics to suit the part. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was released in the United States on December 21 2007, and in the United Kingdom on January 25 2008, to largely enthusiastic reviews. However, Warner Bros.'s decision not to advertise the film as a musical led to complaints from some cinema-goers, who felt they had been deliberately misled. The film won a number of awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and the Academy Award for Best Art Direction. Although not an outstanding financial success in the United States, barely covering its $50 million budget, it performed well worldwide, and has spawned a soundtrack album and various DVD releases.
Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp), a skilled barber, is falsely charged and sentenced to a life of hard labour in Australia by the corrupt Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), who lusts after Barker's wife Lucy (Laura Michelle Kelly). Fifteen years later, under the assumed name "Sweeney Todd", Barker escapes the penal colony by sea, but is shipwrecked. He is saved by sailor Anthony Hope (Jamie Campbell Bower), who takes him aboard the ship Bountiful, headed for England. Upon arrival, Todd returns to his old flat above Mrs. Lovett's (Helena Bonham Carter) pie shop on Fleet Street. There Lovett tells him that his wife took poison after being raped by Turpin, who then adopted Todd's daughter Johanna (Jayne Wisener) as his ward. Todd vows revenge and reopens his barber shop in his upstairs flat.
Wandering the streets of London, Anthony glimpses Johanna singing by a window above the street, and falls in love. He discovers from a mad beggar woman that Johanna is Judge Turpin's ward, but is ejected from the judge's house by a disapproving Turpin and his associate, Beadle Bamford (Timothy Spall), who threaten him with harm should he return. Far from being discouraged, Anthony becomes determined to elope with Johanna.
Todd and Lovett go to the market, where Todd denounces a fraudulent hair tonic being advertised by a faux-Italian street barber, Adolfo Pirelli (Sacha Baron Cohen), and his young assistant, Tobias "Toby" Ragg (Ed Sanders). Todd challenges Pirelli to prove his shaving skills in a speed contest, and invites Beadle Bamford out of the crowd to adjudicate. Winning effortlessly, Todd offers Bamford a complimentary shave.
Pirelli and Toby visit Todd's parlour, and while Lovett keeps Toby occupied downstairs, Pirelli reveals himself as Todd's former assistant, Davey Collins, and attempts to blackmail Todd with knowledge of his true identity. Infuriated by Pirelli's mockery, Todd beats him unconscious, locks him in a trunk, and later slits his throat.
Judge Turpin informs Beadle Bamford of his plan to wed a reluctant Johanna, and follows Bamford's advice to pay a visit to Todd's parlour for tonsorial adornment in order to win her over. Recognising his tormentor, Todd relaxes the judge while preparing to slit his throat, but is interrupted by Anthony who, unaware of Turpin's presence, bursts in and reveals his plan to elope with Johanna. On hearing this, Turpin leaves enraged, vowing to never return. Infuriated at being thwarted, Todd has an epiphany in which he decides to vent his murderous rage upon his customers while waiting for another chance to kill Turpin. In an epiphany of her own, Lovett suggests they dispose of the bodies by baking them into pies to improve her business. Todd enthusiastically agrees and rigs his barber's chair with a pedal-operated mechanism, which deposits his victims through a trapdoor chute into Lovett's bakehouse. As the weeks pass, Todd's murders accumulate and Anthony begins to search for Johanna, who was sent by Turpin to an insane asylum as punishment for her refusal to marry him.
Lovett takes in young Toby, who is unaware of Pirelli's murder. As Todd's and Lovett's business prospers financially, no one but the mad beggar woman suspects anything amiss. While Todd begins to reconcile himself to the unlikelihood of achieving his revenge and ever seeing his daughter again, Lovett expresses her desire to marry Todd, and soon Anthony returns to the shop to inform Todd that he has located Johanna at Fogg's Asylum. Seeing a second chance for vengeance, Todd instructs Anthony to disguise himself as a wigmaker's apprentice, allowing him access as London's wigmakers get their hair from the inmates. Intending to lure the Judge to the barber shop once again, Todd sends Toby to the courthouse with a letter informing him of Anthony's plan to abduct Johanna.
Upon returning, Toby confides in Lovett about his growing distrust of Todd, and vows to protect her. Torn, Lovett coaxes Toby to the bakehouse and locks him inside. As she proceeds to alert Todd of Toby's suspicions, Bamford arrives to investigate complaints of foul odours coming from the bakehouse chimney at night. While Todd lures the Beadle into his barber shop, Toby discovers remnants of butchered corpses in the bakehouse, and thus how the pies are made. The Beadle's corpse then drops into the bakehouse, sending a frightened Toby fleeing into the sewer.
After Todd and Lovett proceed downstairs to murder Toby, Anthony arrives at the barber shop with a disguised Johanna and instructs her to wait for his return. She hides in a trunk in a corner of the room when the crazed beggar woman enters, searching for Beadle Bamford. However, Todd comes back upstairs, finding the woman, who seems to recognise him. At the sound of Judge Turpin's voice, Sweeney hastily kills her to prevent her ruining his opportunity for revenge. Moments later, Turpin enters looking for Johanna, whereupon Todd reassures him of her safety. Todd then offers him a shave, and the Judge reluctantly agrees. Once seated, Todd reveals his true identity and stabs him repeatedly before slitting his throat.
Todd then discovers Johanna in her hiding place. Not recognizing her in her disguise, he attempts to kill her, but is interrupted by Lovett's screams from the basement. Leaving Johanna with a warning, he rushes down to the bakehouse, where Lovett explains that Turpin had clutched onto her frock before dying. She then attempts to dispose of the beggar woman's corpse in the oven, but as the oven fire illuminates the beggar woman's hair and face, Todd recognizes his wife, Lucy, whom he believed to be dead. Realizing that Lovett knew Lucy was alive, but had lied to him because she loved him, Todd begins to waltz maniacally with Lovett around the bakehouse basement before hurling her into the fiery oven. Todd then returns to Lucy and cradles her dead body as an enraged Toby emerges from the sewer and picks up Todd's discarded razor. Todd, now wishing to die and realizing that Toby stands behind him, silently offers his own neck to the boy. Toby slits Todd's throat and kills him, ending the film.
