Michael Clayton (George Clooney) handles law firm Kenner, Bach & Ledeen's unethical foils, but now an unfortunate business venture, a bitter divorce, and astronomical debt have left him a burnt out shell of his former dynamic self. Though he longs to leave the high-tension world of corporate espionage behind, Clayton's poor financial situation and sworn devotion to firm head Marty Bach (Sydney Pollack) leave him no choice but to grit his teeth and remain on the job. Meanwhile, at U/North, litigator Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton) finds her career hinging on the multi-million dollar settlement of a class-action lawsuit currently being led to a successful conclusion by Kenner, Bach & Ledeen. But the burden of guilt has become too weighty for brilliant Kenner, Bach & Ledeen attorney Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson) to bear, and when Edens sabotages the U/North case, Clayton must summon the fortitude to meet the most formidable challenge of his career.
