Dead Silence (originally titled Shhhh... and Silence, with some title suggestions such as The Doll and Mary Shaw) is a 2007 horror film from the creators of Saw, James Wan and Leigh Whannell. The film stars Ryan Kwanten as the main protagonist Jamie Ashen, Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Jim Lipton (a possible reference to Wahlberg's character in Band of Brothers), and Judith Roberts as Mary Shaw. It was released nationwide on March 16th, 2007, and was released on DVD and HD-DVD on June 26, 2007. There are two versions of the movie; the edited, R-rated movie, and an uncut version. The movie took 6 months and 17 days to film.
There is a ghost story in the sleepy suburb of Raven's Fair about Mary Shaw, a ventriloquist whose ambition was to make the perfect doll. Accused of the murder of a young boy named Michael Ashen, she was hunted down and killed by the vengeful townspeople who cut her tongue out. They buried her along with her “children,” a hand-made collection of 101 ventriloquist puppets, including Billy (a reference to the puppet used in the Saw series, who has a cameo later on in the film), Ursula, Gregory, and a clown puppet named Cornelius.
Since that time, Raven's Fair has been plagued by death. The ghastly dolls from Mary Shaw’s collection have gone missing from the grave, and over the decades, families are found gruesomely murdered with their tongues torn out and their jaws ripped open, and their bodies organized like family portraits. This has led to ventriloquist dummies becoming a bad omen in the town of Raven's Fair; as they usually mean that Mary Shaw is nearby, ready to tear out her next tongue. (It is revealed in the unrated version that the tongues stolen are added to a collection in her own mouth, allowing her to steal the voice of the victim as well)
The movie begins with scenes of Mary Shaw writing down things in her notebook and scenes of her assembling Billy. Far from the pall of their hometown, newlyweds Jamie (Ryan Kwanten) and Lisa Ashen (Laura Regan) thought they had established a fresh start, when a ventriloquist dummy, who later turns out to be Billy, one of Mary Shaw's dolls, is mysteriously delivered to their doorstep. Following that, Jamie returns home from getting take out, only to find that Lisa has been viciously murdered, her jaw torn open and her tongue ripped out. Jamie reluctantly returns to Raven's Fair for the funeral, intent on unraveling the mystery of her death while trying to clear his name of his wife's murder.
Once reunited with his wheelchair-bound father (Bob Gunton) and his father’s new young bride Ella (Amber Valletta), Jamie must dig into the town’s bloody past to find out who killed his wife and why. As he uncovers the legend of Mary Shaw, the ventriloquist who performed at the Guignol theater (a reference to the Grand Guignol, the legendary shock-theater playhouse in Paris) decades ago, Jamie unlocks the story of her curse and the truth behind the poem from his childhood. (See the Poem section of the article.)
With the skeptical Detective Jim Lipton (Donnie Wahlberg) following close behind, Jamie investigates the old dilapidated theater where Mary lived; the place where Michael Ashen (the little boy she was accused of murdering) embarrassed her by announcing that he could see her lips moving during one of her performances. As the two of them search through her living quarters in the attic, they find Michael's corpse, strung up like a marionette, and the other 100 missing dolls, which all come to life before them and look over at a rocking chair next to the display cases. It's noticeable that as Jamie and Jim are walking towards the rocking chair, you can look at a support beam and see Jigsaw's doll from Saw (I, II, and III) sitting propped-up against the bottom. As Mary begins communicating through one of them, Cornelius, sitting in the rocking chair, Jamie is horrified to learn why his wife was killed: to kill the last Ashen inside of her.
With that revelation, Cornelius begins laughing evilly, and all of the dolls begin to distort as Mary attempts to use them against Jamie and Lipton. They realize that all 101 of them must be destroyed to prevent Mary from getting them, and ignite the large storage casing holding the puppets on fire, effectively destroying 100 of them, while the last puppet, Billy, still remains in the possession of someone else. As the two of them run to escape the blazing theater, with Mary Shaw already hot on their trail, the catwalk they're running along collapses. Lipton, due to an involuntary scream, is killed in mid-fall by Mary Shaw, while Jamie is sent plunging into the water below the theater.
Jamie realizes that Billy's the only doll left, and the only way to rid Raven's Fair of Mary Shaw is to destroy him. He goes to Henry Walken, the mortician that he left Billy with, only to discover that Mary Shaw had already killed him and Billy had been taken before he went to the theatre when he discovers Henry's wife crying over his dead body. He asks her who took the doll and she says it was Jamie's father (which is impossible since he can't walk). Jamie returns to his father's house to destroy Billy. As he arrives, Mary Shaw appears again, but is forced to retreat when Jamie throws the last puppet into the fireplace. As she is driven back into the shadows, Jamie finds his wheelchair-bound father sitting, staring blankly into space. As he approaches him, Jamie is horrified to find that his father is dead, his entire back torn out and replaced with a wooden shaft used in ventriloquist dummies. As he suddenly realizes that his latest stepmother was always at his father's side, she appears next to him; Ella is in fact the perfect doll that Mary Shaw struggled to make, and had been using Mr. Ashen's corpse as a puppet to lure Jamie in. (the deleted scenes however, show she was an actual person who truly married Mr. Ashen. After being assaulted by him, she's visited by Mary Shaw's ghost. Ella goes to the graveyard and digs up Billy, at which point Mary Shaw takes possession of her body.) Ella then says "Now, who's the dummy?" and lightening flashes in the sky, showing Mary Shaw behind her disguise, who tears Jamie's tongue and jaw out as he screams "No!". The end shows Mary Shaw's puppet book with pictures of Jamie and his family as dolls. As the camera zooms away from the book, Jamie recites the poem and when he is done, Mary Shaw closes the book and the credits begin to roll.
