Black Snake Moan is a 2007 film released on March 2. It was written and directed by Craig Brewer (of Hustle & Flow fame), was filmed in and around Memphis, Tennessee, and stars Samuel L. Jackson, and Christina Ricci. The title of the film derives from the 1927 Blind Lemon Jefferson song, while the plot is loosely based on George Eliot's 1861 novel Silas Marner, which also features a religious social outcast recovering from romantic betrayal. In Silas Marner, Eppie is tied to Silas's house with a length of cloth for purposes similar to the iconic chain in Black Snake Moan.
Black Snake Moan is set in a rural Tennessee town even though it is not stated there are many clues that it is set in Tennessee ("Everything is hotter down south"). Lazarus (portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson), is a deeply religious farmer, a former blues guitarist with marital problems; his wife has left him for his brother which leaves him with agony and rage. Rae (Christina Ricci) is a sex-addicted young woman, traumatized by child abuse. She is distressed by the departure for duty of Ronnie (Justin Timberlake), her boyfriend who leaves on deployment with the National Guard.
With Ronnie not around to look out and care for her, she goes out partying. Afterwards, she is picked up and confronted by Gill, a friend of Ronnie. He wants intercourse with her, but she makes fun of him. In a rage, Gill beats Rae up and pushes her out of his truck, severely wounded and passed out. The following morning Lazarus finds her lying on the road, scantily dressed. He nurses her, believing that God put her on his path to reconcile himself. He keeps her from leaving the house by putting her on a long heavy chain. Rae is upset, but eventually agrees with the situation. She is willing to have sex with him but he refuses. While Lazarus is in town, Rae has sex with virgin teenage delivery boy Lincoln. When Lazarus comes home he chases him off. Rae is sad and disappointed in herself, finding she really doesn't want to do the things she does. He brings his minister to her to speak about her thoughts and feelings. Together they enjoy a home cooked meal. Meanwhile, Ronnie comes home. He is discharged because of his severe anxiety disorder. Gill tells him the truth about Rae, even exaggerating. Ronnie is very upset by this. Rae starts to feel better and appreciates Lazarus' care. He removes the chain, arguing that it isn't up to him to change her. They go into town together for shopping, people are surprised to see them together. Rae confronts her mother about the abuse she suffered and then attacks her. Lazarus takes her home and soothes her feelings. In the evening they go to a bar, where Lazarus plays his blues once again. Ronnie spots them together and goes into Lazarus's home. In a confrontation, Ronnie pulls his gun, but Lazarus and Rae manage to calm him down and talk it out, under guidance of the minister. The lovers make up and get married.
