Melissa Suzanne
George (born August 6, 1976 in Perth, Western Australia)
is an Australian actress and athlete who has worked in
Australia and the United States in film and television.
Early life: George was born in Perth, Western
Australia, to Glenn and Pamela George. The second of
four children, George developed an interest in dancing
and began studying jazz, tap, ballet, and modern dance
at the age of seven. Her enthusiasm for dance eventually
evolved into a passion for roller skating. George was an
Australian national roller skating champion and won
bronze medals in the National Championships in 1989 and
1990. She also won a silver medal at the Junior World
Championship in 1991.
Career: George started modeling in her early
teens and in 1992 she was named Western Australia's
Teenage Model of the Year. At age 16 she was discovered
by casting agent Liz Mullinar and got the role of Angel
Parish on the popular Australian soap Home and Away.
George left Perth and moved to Sydney to start her
acting career. After 3 years on the show she decided to
leave to try find other acting challenges.
George made a health and fitness video Mind, Body and
Soul (1996), created a sleepwear line named "An
Angel at My Bedside" and had a recurring role on
the short lived television series Roar (1997), opposite
Heath Ledger, before leaving Australia to move to Los
Angeles to try her luck in the US. After moving to Los
Angeles, she scored small roles in several films,
including Dark City, The Limey, Mulholland Drive and
Down with Love. She also starred in several TV pilots
that were never aired on television such as 'Lost in
Oz'. She had brief success in 2001 with the cancelled
ABC drama-comedy Thieves, co-starring John Stamos.
George got her breakthrough in 2003 when she landed the
role of Lauren Reed on the ABC series Alias. Also in
this year, she became Rachel's nanny in American's
sitcom Friends.
Her first starring role in a movie was as Kathy Lutz in
the 2005 remake of The Amityville Horror. In the same
year, she played Deanna Schine in the thriller Derailed,
co-starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston.
Australian actress Melissa George was born in Perth on
August 6, 1976, the second of four children. As a child,
she developed an interest in dancing and began studying
jazz, tap, ballet, and modern dance at the age of seven.
George's enthusiasm for dance eventually evolved into a
passion for roller skating, and, after skating
competitively in Australia, she represented her nation
in several international events.
At 16, George left skating behind when she quit school
and began exploring the world of modeling; she was soon
named Western Australia's Teenage Model of the Year. As
a result of this honor, she auditioned for a role in the
popular Australian soap opera Home and Away, and, in
1993, was cast as Angel Brooks. George's performance won
her a sizable following in both Australia and Great
Britain, but, after three years with the series, she
left to pursue other projects.
After appearing in several made-for-TV movies (and
posing in the Aussie edition of Playboy), the actress
landed a small role in the sci-fi thriller Dark City,
and was cast as the female lead in an offbeat television
pilot, Hollyweird, which, unfortunately, failed to sell.
After a brief appearance in Steven Soderbergh's The
Limey (as Terence Stamp's ill-fated daughter), George
landed her first significant American role in the teen
comedy Sugar & Spice, in which she played Cleo, a
cheerleader turned criminal who has an unquenchable
enthusiasm for Conan O'Brien; she also played a small
but important role as mob-connected ingénue Camilla
Rhodes in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, and appeared
in the pilot of HBO's short-lived series adaptation of
L.A. Confidential.
In 2001, George was cast opposite John Stamos in the
leading roles of the television series Thieves; despite
positive reviews, however, the series lasted only three
months.
She got another chance to prove her mettle on American
television in 2003, when she was cast in an American
version of the popular British sitcom Coupling.
Unfortunately, she only got to act in an unaired version
of the pilot episode before her part was recast.
The show failed anyway and George rebounded quickly,
landing a prominent role in the 2003-2004 season of the
popular spy series Alias as Lauren Reed, the new wife of
Agent Vaughn (Michael Vartan) and romantic rival of
Sydney Bristow (series star Jennifer Garner).
2006 was a busy year for George, who filmed three new
movies; the drama Music Within, opposite Ron Livingston,
the thriller Waz, opposite Stellan Skarsgård, and the
movie adaptation of the graphic novel 30 Days of Night,
directed by David Slade and co-starring Josh Hartnett.
All movies are set for a 2007 release.
George will make her return to television in summer 2007
in the HBO's half-hour drama In Treatment, co-starring
Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest.
In 2006 it was announced that George is the new face and
spokesperson for cosmetics company Napoleon Perdis. She
is also the face of the Australian jewelry company
Linneys.
Private life: George lives in Los Angeles with
her husband Claudio Dabed and his daughter Martina (born
1995). She and Dabed met in Bali in 1998 and married on
September 22, 2000.
