Isla Lang Fisher (born February 3, 1976)
is an Australian actress and author. She began acting on
Australian television, and is since perhaps best known
for her role in the 2005 comedy Wedding Crashers. Fisher
is scheduled to appear in several more Hollywood films.
Early life: Fisher was born in Muscat, Oman to
Scottish parents and moved with her family to Perth,
Western Australia, when she was nine months old. Her
name, after the Scottish island of Islay, is pronounced
"Eye-Lah"; she has two brothers. Fisher has
said that she had a "great" upbringing in
Perth with a "very outdoorsy life". She began
appearing in commercials on Australian television at the
age of nine, before going on to win roles in popular
childrens' television shows Bay City and Paradise Beach.
She later became known for playing Shannon Reed on the
popular TV soap opera Home and Away.
Career: At the age of eighteen, with the help of
her mother, she wrote two teen novels (Bewitched and
Seduced by Fame) that became bestsellers. From 1994 to
1997 she played the role of Shannon Reed on the hit
Aussie soap Home and Away. After leaving the popular
soap to pursue new challenges Isla enrolled at
prestigious theatre and arts training school in Paris,
and went on to appear in pantomime in the UK.
She also toured with Darren Day in the
Summer Holiday musical, and appeared in a London theatre
production called Cosi. Isla's ambition was always to
progress onto the big screen however, and in 2002 she
had a part in in the film version of Scooby-Doo as
Mary-Jane, Shaggy's love interest, and subsequently was
taken on by an American agent. A larger role in Wedding
Crashers in 2005 won her the Breakthrough Performance
Award at the MTV Movie Awards. While promoting Wedding
Crashers (co-starring Owen Wilson), she was officially
crowned the 1000th guest on Australian talk show Rove on
August 2, 2005. She entered the set ahead of Wilson,
winning the title by two meters.
In 2006, Fisher starred as Becca, a Manhattan party host
in the offbeat relationship drama London alongside
Jessica Biel, Chris Evans and Jason Statham. Her most
recent role is in The Lookout, a thriller co-starring
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Matthew Goode. She will next
appear in The Pleasure of Your Company, co-starring
Jason Biggs, Hot Rod, opposite Andy Samberg, Definitely,
Maybe, with Rachel Weisz and Abigail Breslin, and will
have a voice role in Horton Hears a Who! Fisher has also
co-written a treatment for a script entitled Groupies
with Amy Poehler, as well as another project entitled
The Cookie Queen. She will also have a speaking role in
the upcoming The Simpsons Movie although her role is
currently unknown.
The Australian actress and former soap star has left the
Australian out-back to enter the busy life of a Brit, by
moving to London back in May 1997. Since arriving in
Britian she has appeared in many magazines and TV
programs while also attending drama school in Paris. Now
if that wasn't enough she still finds the time to write,
and she has had two top selling novels, where does her
talent end. Recentley voted 24th sexist woman of 99 by
leading men's magazine FHM and previously voted 11th in
1998, Isla has no problem in finding a man.
But love hasn't come easy for Isla she's had countless
number of boyfriends, the most recent two are Sir Evelyn
De Rothschild ( a multi-millionaire recording producer )
and Darren Day ( actor and TV presenter ). To who she
was going to be married to in late 1999.
This ended shortly after the news of their engagement
broke, like most of Darren's relationships.Isla's acting
career is a story all of it's own, it all began in her
childhood years with a deep inner passions for acting.
Growing up in a family of four bothers and no other
sisters was difficult, always being picked on by her
older brothers, but this also gave her strength to fight
for her dreams and her beliefs. Being the only girl in
the family Isla grow very close to her mother who was a
author and supported Isla in what ever she did and she
would play a big part in Isla's writing career.
At the young age of just 9 years old Isla got her first
break, she was to appear in a TV commercial. Although
there wasn't any acting involved it was the start of
bigger things to come. Soon after she would be in a few
other commercials and a small Australian series called
''Bay City''.Now she had got herself an agent who would
help her in landing larger contracts. It wasn't long
before a producer gave her the chance she needed by
offering her a part in ''Paradise Beach'' her acting
talents started to shine through.
When the series was over unknown to her she would go on
to star in one of Australia's largest soapsIn 1994 she
signed up to play the character 'Shannon Reed' for three
years in the Australian soap ''Home & Away''.
During the three short years she would lead her
character from being an unheard of girl to a drop dead
sexy red head with thousands tuning in every day.Whilist
working on the set of Home & Away she also found the
time to write with the help of her mother she would go
on to release two best selling novels.
Personal life: Fisher resides in Los Angeles, as
well as London, with her fiancé, English comedian Sacha
Baron Cohen. She has converted to Orthodox Judaism
in advance of her marriage to Cohen, who is Jewish. As
of March 2007, the two have not yet set a date for their
wedding.
Fisher has said that her "sensibility is
Australian" and that she has a "laid-back
attitude to life" that she feels is "very
Australian". Her mother and siblings live and work
in Athens, Greece, while her father lives in Frankfurt,
Germany. |
