Elizabeth Berkley
(born July 28, 1972) is an American television, film,
and stage actress. She is known for her roles on the
television series Saved by the Bell and the 1995 film
Showgirls.
Career: Berkley gained prominence for her role as
Jessica "Jessie" Spano in the sitcom Saved by
the Bell, whom she played from 1989 to 1992. Her
character spoke against the objectification of women and
had a pro-feminist bent. Aside from her work on Saved by
the Bell, Berkley is best known for playing Nomi Malone,
the lead character in the infamous 1995 film Showgirls.
The sex and nudity-laden movie, given an NC-17 rating in
the United States, was a box office bomb, widely panned
by critics, and is generally credited with ruining
Berkley's movie career. However, as years passed the
movie progressively obtained a "so bad it's
good" reputation.
As time has put distance between Berkley and the
infamous film (and the fact that it had gained cult
status among movie buffs), she has gained reasonable
critical praise with her performances in smaller roles
in independent films like The Real Blonde, Roger Dodger,
and Woody Allen's The Curse of the Jade Scorpion.
Berkley received much acclaim for her role as Honey
Bruce in the 1999 London stage version of Lenny,
opposite Eddie Izzard. She most recently got favorable
reviews as Bonnie in the Off-Broadway production of
Hurlyburly, which opened on June 11, 2005.
A student of dance since she was four, rising Hollywood
star Elizabeth Berkely has been in show business since
the age of nine. She got her start in television
appearing in over a dozen series, the best-known of
which is Saved By the Bell, in which she played
proto-feminist high school student Jesse Spano from 1989
to 1991. Berkely made her feature film debut billed as
Macrame Girl in the Patrick Swayze / Keanu Reeves
vehicle Point Break (1991). In 1995, Berkely gained
national notoriety and proved that she had come a long
way since Jesse Spano when she played the trashy,
determined, and frequently naked lead in the Joe
Esterhaz-penned, Paul Verhoeven-directed Showgirls
(1995), a glitzy exploitation film that, while one of
the year's biggest stinkers, gained popularity on the
midnight movie circuit, especially among drag queens.
While such negative publicity as was received by
Showgirls can be instant death to a budding career,
Berkely has continued to appear in films such as The
First Wives Club (1996) as a supporting actress.
Born in Farmington Hills, Michigan on July 28th, 1972,
baby Elizabeth Berkley showed an early aptitude for
dance. At age five, her parents enrolled her at the
Detroit Dance Company. As her love for dance grew with
the years, she began performing at high-profile shows
such as Swan Lake, which attracted large audiences. As
talent scouts started to frequent her shows, her parents
were able to land her parts on TV shows such as Gimme a
Break! and Silver Spoons, when she was seven years old.
After her film debut in 1987's made-for-TV movie Frog,
she landed her most important part yet: the role of
Jessie Spano in the Saturday morning TV sensation, Saved
by the Bell. After four successful seasons, Elizabeth
was finally of age to start an official movie career.
The 1995 release of Showgirls, however, was not the kind
of beginning she had envisioned. Drooled over by men and
vilified by the media for her portrayal of a lap dancer,
she took most of the rap for the film's failure.
Admirably, Elizabeth kept plugging away, determined to
make a positive name for herself in the movie industry.
She continued to do television, and made guest
appearances on NYPD Blue and Jack and Jill. In 1996,
Goldie Hawn recommended her for a small role in the
movie The First Wives Club after publicly stating that
Elizabeth deserved a chance to redeem herself after
doing Showgirls.
During the two subsequent years after The First Wives
Club, Elizabeth starred in three movies that never
really left their mark, including The Real Blonde.
Spurned on by the desire to have a big box-office hit,
she accepted roles in five movies in 1999, including a
minor part in Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday alongside
Al Pacino and Cameron Diaz.
Always turned on by comedy, Elizabeth decided to return
to television in the FOX sitcom Titus in 2001 and
currently still makes an occasional appearance. Of late,
Elizabeth's most notable project is Woody Allen's The
Curse of the Jade Scorpion, released in 2001.
Aside from the silver screen, Elizabeth, who is a
vegetarian, has posed for PETA (People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals). She has even claimed to have
called restaurants located in America's ten
"fattest" cities to encourage them to put more
greens on the menu.
After her Showgirls days, she dated actor Roger Wilson,
who, in 1999, got her in some hot water after filing a
$45 million lawsuit against Leonardo DiCaprio and his
crew. Wilson claimed to have a broken larynx and other
injuries after duking it out with Leo and his crew over
a pass the Titanic star allegedly made at Elizabeth. At
last check, the leggy blonde parted ways with Wilson and
was dating another actor, Greg Lauren.
In 2002, she began a recurring role in the third season
of the sitcom Titus as Christopher Titus' sister
Shannon. The show was cancelled after the season ended.
She has been seen largely in dramatic television roles
since then, guest starring on series such as CSI, NYPD
Blue,Without A Trace, and Threshold. Her most recent
appearance was on an episode of Law & Order:
Criminal Intent. She also starred in the Lifetime
made-for-television movie, Student Seduction in which
she played Christy Dawson, a high school teacher
wrongfully accused of sexual harassment by one of her
students who becomes obsessed with her.
In October 2006 Elizabeth appeared in the audience of
Dancing With the Stars to cheer on friend and former
costar Mario Lopez and in an interview with Access
Hollywood stated she would like to appear on the show
for its 4th Season.
Personal life: Berkley has sectoral
heterochromia; her right eye is half green and half
brown, and her entire left eye is green. Berkley was the
subject of a $45 million lawsuit filed by ex-boyfriend
Roger Wilson against Leonardo DiCaprio. It was alleged
that DiCaprio bombarded Berkley with messages after
spotting her at the promotional party to his film The
Man in the Iron Mask and was initially ignored. After
encountering Wilson and Berkley outside a New York bar
in 1998, DiCaprio allegedly instructed friends to attack
Wilson, who suffered a serious throat injury after the
subsequent assault. A judge threw out the case in 2004.
On November 1, 2003, Berkley married actor/painter Greg
Lauren at the Esperanza Hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Greg's uncle Ralph designed her wedding dress, a silk
sheath with pearled spaghetti straps. She is a strict
vegan and does not wear leather.
